NMC PreK's Dinosaur Unit is in full swing! We're exploring diverse dinosaur species, learning about their diets (carnivore, omnivore, herbivore), and discovering the work of paleontologists at "dig sites." Children are actively engaged, pretending to be paleontologists at the sand table, excavating and identifying hidden bones. They've also created their own salt dough fossils. Our classroom has transformed into a dinosaur world, with themed pretend play, sensory activities, and a listening station featuring dinosaur read-alouds.

This week at NMC PreK, we dove into the world of ice and snow! Our little scientists rescued Arctic animals trapped in "icebergs" by using warm blue water and eyedroppers, learning about the transformation of water from liquid to solid. We conducted a fun experiment, testing how salt, sugar, and baking soda affect melting ice. The children predicted which would melt fastest, and salt proved to be the winner! Outside, we built snow castles and walls with snow block makers and explored the fascinating life cycle of a snowflake. To top off our frosty week, we made snow cones with various juice flavors, a delicious treat for our budding explorers.

Last week, elementary and middle school students met with Superintendent Regulbuto to begin discussing the Sandy Hook Promise initiative during their Superintendent Advisory Council meeting. The first year of this program is Start With Hello: Teaching empathy and empowering students to end social isolation by following three easy steps. Start With Hello is one of Sandy Hook Promise’s no-cost Know the Signs programs and teaches students to be more socially inclusive and connected to each other. With activities and curricula available for all ages, students are empowered to end social isolation in three easy steps. We look forward to incorporating this initiative into our District with student ambassadors leading us all in this work!
