Learning is the key to a full and productive life.  A commitment to learning must involve the child, parent, teacher and community.  The South Egremont School,  a unit of the Southern Berkshire Regional School District, is a one room schoolhouse located in South Egremont, Massachusetts.   The multi-age Kindergarten/Grade 1 school aims to provide an environment which recognizes the uniqueness of each child, stimulates the fullest development of a child’s potential and encourages pride in achievement.  Students are helped to acquire skills needed to become purposeful and effective members of this ever changing society and to understand the scope of their responsibilities.

Ideally our efforts will foster a life-long interest in learning.  We welcome, honor and enjoy the uniqueness of each person who comes to our school. We accept and celebrate differences in people and strive for a school environment in which students, parents, staff and other community citizens are active partners in educational excellence.  We are committed to challenging each and every student and providing many options to the ways in which children acquire knowledge and express what they have learned.

Meeting the academic, social and emotional needs of our students is our first and foremost goal.  Academically, the South Egremont School core curriculum is based on both the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and on national curriculum standards in the arts, English, history and social studies, health, mathematics, science and technology.  Art, music and physical education are a part of the each student’s schedule.

The South Egremont School is a Kindergarten/Grade 1 program with 16 students.  The full-time paraprofessional  gives the teacher the flexibility to group and regroup students throughout the school day.  Parents are updated on their child’s progress at parent conferences, team meetings, through teacher phone calls, and written reports that are sent home two times per year.

Among the vital organizations that help to make South Egremont program excellent are the school councils and the P. T. O.   Through collaboration, these organizations provide the school with support in the development of the school’s improvement plan, enrichment programs and supplies and materials.
