Undermountain Elementary

The Undermountain Elementary School is the newest and largest of the District's four elementary schools. The building opened in January of 1993, and currently hosts an enrollment of just over 400 students in grades PK-6.

Meeting the academic, social, and emotional needs of our students is the first and foremost goal of the staff and administration. Academically, the Undermountain Elementary School core curriculum is based on both the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and on national curriculum standards in the arts, English, history and social studies, health, mathematics, science and technology.

Art, music, and physical education are a part of the each student's schedule. Formal technology education begins in grade 5. Throughout the school year, special opportunities available to students include dance, theater, robotics, athletics, and various other after school activities.

Although larger than its sister schools in South Egremont, New Marlborough, and Monterey, the classes at Undermountain Elementary School are kept at an optimally small size; the average in grades PK-2 is 15-18 students; in grades 3-6, class sizes range from 17-22. In grades PreK-2, a full-time paraprofessional is assigned to each class to assist in the classroom, at lunch, and during recess. Paraprofessionals also assist teachers in grades 3-6. The paraprofessionals give our teachers the flexibility to group and regroup students throughout the school day.

A variety of special education services and supports are also available at Undermountain for our District students with special needs.
