Pottery

Pottery is divided into two one-semester offerings. During the first semester, students learn the basic skills of pottery making. This program begins by refining techniques in hand-building: pinch, coil, and slab methods. Vocabulary and clay knowledge will be expanded. Students will spend the remainder of the course mastering throwing on the potter's wheel, learning glaze chemistry, and working with the kiln.

Students complete cylinders, pots with handles, plates, lidded jars, pitchers, lanterns, banks, and clay sculptures.

Advanced pottery is taught during the second semester. This course is designed for the serious, highly motivated pottery student. The course will improve skills in hand building and/or wheel work. Students build on previous knowledge from the Pottery I class. Quality, creativity and originality are the prime objectives. Possible projects include larger pieces, mixing personal glazes, matched sets, bi-levels, covered pieces and the doughnut shape. The student will set his/her own ambitious goals and work to achieve those goals.
