Math Instructional Support
Educators are life-long learners, committed to being current in our profession and more importantly, and (OMIT) to being effective with our students. With a new math series in place at SBRSD in grades K-6 and the expectation that teachers teach math in new and different ways, the District has brought a teacher of teachers on-site to support and coach our faculty throughout the 2015-16 school year.
Patricia (Pat) DeAngelis is a Mathematics Curriculum Specialist for Collaborative for Educational Services (CES) from Northampton, MA. She has taught elementary, high school, and college students, worked as a mathematics coach in the Boston Public Schools, and led professional development workshops for Summer Math for Teachers at Mount Holyoke College. In addition, she has worked in a small rural elementary setting and in multi-age, multi-grade classrooms. Her work with the Boston Public Schools parents has been presented at NCSM, NAACP, and other educational conferences. Pat is currently offering “Exploring Math Concepts” workshop series at CES to promote understanding and engagement to support a wide range of learners to flexibly problem solve.
As a math consultant on site, Pat is offering instructional coaching along with professional development during our half and full release days and for the participants of the Go Math! Implementation Professional Learning Community (PLC). Pat’s expertise is guiding K-6 teachers to develop new skills and strategies for teaching math with emphasis on student-centered reasoning and problem-solving. We are pleased to have Pat DeAngelis
on board as we focus on elementary math instruction and curriculum
Watch our math program in action for grades K/1.
Teaching math today does not look like it did when many parents were students themselves, and we think that is a good thing! What students are expected to be able to do goes well beyond math facts, computation, and the four operations—addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
SBRSD elementary students are expected at all ages to think critically, identify skills and strategies to grapple with and solve problems, and share their reasoning with peers who may have another equally valid approach.
Go Math! for grades K-6 is a standards-based curriculum that aligns with the Common Core State Standards as incorporated in the MA Curriculum Frameworks for Mathematics (2011). Along with solid instruction from
their teachers, this math series with its focus on the 8 standards below is an integrated way to pave the different life and career paths ahead for
8 Standards of Mathematical Practices:
1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
4. Model with mathematics.
5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
6. Attend to precision.
7. Look for and make use of structure.
8. Look for an express regularity in repeated reasoning.
As parents, helping your child with math may be challenging at times. For educators, moving forward with a new math series is also challenging. However, we want to do this work together. Your feedback is important. If you have any suggestions, questions, or concerns, please contact your child’s classroom teacher or Principal Stacy Burgess.
