The Pulsera Project is a nonprofit organization that educates, empowers, and connects Nicaraguan artists with students in more than 1,300 U.S. schools through the sale of colorful handwoven bracelets, or "pulseras" in Spanish."
We took advantage of this great opportunity to teach fifth and sixth graders about Nicaragua, Fair Trade, and civic engagement- showing students that they can make a difference in the lives of people.
After learning about specific bracelet artists and kids in Nicaragua, our students became the spokespeople and sellers in the UME lobby. Our plan was to sell the 400 bracelets over the course of November, but after only one week the community, students and their families, had bought every single bracelet! It was an extremely empowering experience for the students and we look forwards to doing it again next fall.
As a thank you, the Pulsera Project sent us a pair of handmade maracas from Managua, Nicaragua. As you can see Undermountain Elementary is engraved in the maracas. This was a beautiful gesture by the Pulsera Project.
Thank you to all who supported our students and Nicaraguan youth through the sale of bracelets!
SBRSD is proud to provide world language education to our students. Spanish is offered from grades one through twelve. French is offered to grades seven through twelve.
In this era of globalization, effective communication and cross-cultural understanding are key to success.
Our mission is to guide students in their exploration of foreign languages and cultures, thereby fostering curiosity, love, and respect for diversity and a deep understanding for the value of inclusivity.
