Undermountain Elementary School, a unit of the Southern Berkshire
Regional School District, aims to provide an environment which recognizes
the uniqueness of each child, stimulates the fullest development of a child’s
potential and encourages pride in achievement. Students are helped
to acquire skills needed to become purposeful and effective members of
this ever changing society and to understand the scope of their responsibilities.
Ideally our efforts will foster a life-long interest in learning.
We welcome, honor and enjoy the uniqueness of each person who comes to
our school. We accept and celebrate differences in people and strive for
a school environment in which students, parents, staff and other community
citizens are active partners in educational excellence. We are committed
to challenging each and every student and providing many options to the
ways in which children acquire knowledge and express what they have learned.
Meeting the academic, social and emotional needs of our students
is our first and foremost goal. Academically, the Undermountain Elementary
School core curriculum is based on both the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks
and on national curriculum standards in the arts, English, history and
social studies, health, mathematics, science and technology. Art,
music and physical education are a part of the each student’s schedule
and formal technology education begins in grade 5. Throughout the
school year, special opportunities available to students include dance,
theater, YAPP (Young American Playwright’s Program), after school sports
such as wrestling, baseball, softball and soccer, the DARE Program, and
pottery.
The classes at Undermountain Elementary School never have more than
25 students. In grades PreK-2, each classroom teacher has a paraprofessional
who assists in the classroom, at lunch and during recess. Paraprofessionals
also assist teachers in grades 3-6. The paraprofessionals give our
teachers the flexibility to group and regroup students throughout the school
day. Parents are updated on their child’s progress at parent
conferences, team meetings, through teacher phone calls, and written reports
that are sent home two times per year in grades K-2 and three times per
year in grades 3-6.
Among the vital organizations that help to make Undermountain Elementary
programs excellent are the school council and the P.T.O.
Through collaboration, these organizations provide our school community
with support in the development of the school’s improvement plan, scholarships,
enrichment programs and supplies and materials.
