Assistive Technology Resources

This web site presents a listing of the assistive technology resources available for preK-12 students and staff in the SBRSD.  Much of the hardware and software is available  in classrooms or in the Cyber Cafe.  Links to the wide variety of resources available via the internet are also provided, including those that assist in the creation of web pages and tools for accessing  web pages.

eReader Helps students develop reading, note-taking, and study skills.
**Co:Writer 4000 Word prediction program to support the process of writing.
**Scan & read Helps students develop reading skills.
IntelliMathics Interactive talking, problem solving tool for on-screen math manipulatives.
**Intellipics Studio Complete set of drawing and painting tools that allows students the ability to create and share ideas.
IntelliTalk II Interactive talking word processor. Includes a full range of text, speech & graphics options.
Overlay Maker Used to create custom overlays for IntelliKeys USB for any activities with IntelliMathics and IntelliTalk II.
The Gate: guide to assistive technology expereinces. Presents narrated photos & video clips of 14 persons of various ages & devices in 6 function areas.
Read Please Reads any text seen on the screen from e-mail, browser, word processor, etc.
**Write: Outloud Word processor that reads text out loud as students write.
Edmark Reading Program Level I Sequenced, highly repetitive sight-word approach for those who haven’t mastered beginning reading.
**Inspiration Graphic organizer.
**Kidspiration Graphic organizer.
Mind Mapper for Windows Graphic organizer.

Massachusetts Assistive Technology Partnership - Provides information and referral, advocacy, training workshops and conferences.

Rehabtool.com - High-tech assistive, adaptive and acessibility aids for children and adults with disabilities.

Wisconsin Assistive Technology Initiative  - A statewide project funded by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction to help all school districts develop or improve their assistive technology services.  This comprehensive site is an excellent resource.

CAST - Center for Applied Special Technology - A not-for-profit organization that uses technology to expand opportunities for all people, especially those with disabilities.

ABLEDATA - Information on assistive technology and disability issues.

Assistivetech.net - Information on assistive technologies, adaptive environments and community resources for people with disabilities, including their families and service providers.

NCIP - National Center to Improve Practice in Special Education through Technology, Media & Materials - Promotes the effective use of technology to enhance educational outcomes for students with sensory, cognitive, physical and social/emotional disabilities.

Research Institute for Assistive Training & Technologies - The goal of RIATT is to provide Assistive Technology training through distance education that can be taken at home or the office.   National Association of State Directors of Special Education (NASDSE)

UCP (United Cerebral Palsy) - Berkshires - UCP is the leading source of information on cerebral palsy and is a pivotal advocate for the rights of persons with any disability

YAACK - Augmentative and Alternative Communication Connecting Young Kids - Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Connecting Young Kids (YAACK) is a website that covers issues related to AAC and young children. Its purpose is to provide information and guidance to families, teachers, speech/language pathologists and anyone else who is involved with a child with special communication needs.

AAC - Augmentative/Alternative Communication Intervention Products & Presentations - A resource on how to use a variety of tools including practical tips, resources and exercises.

W3C - World Wide Web Consortium - the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) creates Web standards. W3C's mission is to lead the Web to its full potential, which it does by developing technologies (specifications, guidelines, software, and tools) that will create a forum for information, commerce, inspiration, independent thought, and collective understanding

Usability.gov - an excellent and comprehensive collection of resources concerning design and access of the web for persons with disabilities.

The Alliance for Technology Access - The Alliance for Technology Access (ATA) is a network of community-based Resource Centers, Developers, Vendors and Associates dedicated to providing information and support services to children and adults with disabilities, and increasing their use of standard, assistive, and information technologies.

TRACE Center - College of Engineering, University of Wisconsin - Madison - Collection of resources on the "designing a more usable world - for all."

Web Access Tools - Excellent collection of resources for designing accessible web pages as well as resources that help to make web pages more usable.
