509 FRENCH I
Course meets for 42 minutes all year
1.0 credit

This course is designed to teach the basic skills of understanding, speaking, reading, and writing French.  The cultures of the French-speaking world are introduced through texts, videos, tapes, and guest speakers.  Class work includes extensive oral practice, reading and writing assignments, vocabulary building, and grammar exercises.  Daily homework assignments are collected, corrected, and returned to students.  The course grade is determined by homework effort, quiz and test grades, conversation grades and class participation/decorum.
 

510 FRENCH II
Course meets for 42 minutes all year
Prerequisite: Grade of 80 or above in French I, passing grade on level one assessment test and/or recommendation of the teacher.
1.0 credit

The basic skills thrust of French I continues in French II with more stress on grammatical structure and on the spoken language.  Class work includes reading for comprehension, group dialogues, oral presentations, and the writing of personalized paragraphs.  Daily homework consists of reading, writing, grammar exercises, and the preparation of oral activities.  Written homework assignments are collected, corrected, and returned to students.  Composition drafts are collected, commented upon, and returned to students to be rewritten.  Final drafts of compositions are worth a quiz grade.  The course grade is determined by homework effort, quiz and test grades, conversation grades and class participation/decorum.
 

499 FRENCH III
Prerequisite: Grade of 80 or above in French II, passing grade on level two assessment test and/or recommendation of the teacher.
1.0 credit

A greater competence in oral communication and a more in-depth understanding of grammar are the two main objectives of this course.  Role-playing and dialogues are regular in-class activities; grammar-strengthening exercises are also stressed.
Daily homework assignments consist of reading and writing exercises leading to the writing of compositions.  Written homework assignments are collected, corrected, and returned to students.  Composition drafts are collected, commented upon, and returned to students to be rewritten.  Final drafts of compositions are worth a quiz grade.  This class is conducted in French.  The course grade is determined by homework effort, quiz and test scores, conversation grades and class participation/decorum.
 

504 FRENCH IV
Long block semester course.
Prerequisite: Grade of 80 or above in French III and/or recommendation of the teacher.
1.0 credit

Emphasis is placed on broadening the student’s understanding of French-speaking cultures by reading French magazine and newspaper articles, short stories, plays, and poetry.  Videos and tapes are the basis for class discussions and writing assignments.  Daily homework assignments are replaced by long-range reading and writing assignments along with the preparation of group skits.  Written assignments are collected, graded, and returned to students.  Compositions are assigned on a regular basis and count as quiz or test grades.  This course is conducted entirely in French.  The course grade is determined by homework effort, quiz and test grades, conversation grades and class participation/decorum.
 

505 FRENCH V
Long block semester course. FRENCH V IS OFFERED ON ALTERNATE YEARS AND IS SUBJECT TO ENROLLMENT.
Prerequisite: Grade of 80 or above in French IV and/or recommendation of the teacher.
1.0 credit

This course will allow advanced students to strengthen their proficiency in the French language.  Students will read short stories, newspapers, and magazine articles in order to deepen their knowledge and understanding of French-speaking cultures.  Oral communication will be a major focus of this course.  Students will be expected to make presentations, prepare skits, and hold class discussions in French.  Compositions will be assigned on a regular basis.  Although grammar will not be the main focus of the course, regular vocabulary building and grammar-strengthening exercises will be included to ensure that students maintain the skills they have mastered in previous French courses.  Compositions are assigned on a regular basis, and count as test or quiz grades.  This course is conducted entirely in French.  The course grade is determined by homework effort, quiz and test grades, conversation grades and class participation/decorum.

518 SPANISH I
Course meets for 42 minutes all year
1.0 credit

This course is designed to teach the basic skills of understanding and speaking Spanish with sufficient attention to grammar to enable the student to begin to read and write in Spanish.  The culture of the Hispanic world is presented using videos, audio tapes, and authentic materials.  Class work includes extensive oral practice as well as short reading and writing exercises.  Students are also expected to present short oral dialogues.  Daily homework assignments are collected, corrected, and returned to students.  The course grade is determined by homework effort, quiz and test grades, conversation grades and class participation/decorum.
 
 

515 SPANISH III
Prerequisite: Grade of 80 or above in Spanish II, passing grade on level two assessment test and/or recommendation of the teacher.
1.0 credit

This course stresses reading, writing, and oral performance.  There is an extensive grammar review stressing verbs.  Role-playing exercises are a major part of the class work.  Readings will place more emphasis on Hispanic culture and society.  Daily class work and homework will include reading for meaning, three paragraph compositions, and preparation of oral presentations.  Written work is collected, corrected, and returned to students.  Compositions are graded.  This class is conducted in Spanish.  The course grade is determined by homework effort, quiz and test grades, conversation grades and class participation/decorum.
 

514 SPANISH IV
Long block semester course.
Prerequisite: Grade of 80 or above in Spanish III and/or recommendation of the teacher.
1.0 credit

This course is designed for the student capable of doing advanced work in reading, writing, and speaking.  The student will read and respond to short stories, newspaper articles and magazines that present Hispanic culture and society.  Long-range assignments include writing compositions and the preparation of speeches and skits.  Literature, video and audio tapes are the basis for discussions and writing assignments.  Written assignments are collected, corrected, and returned to students.  Compositions are graded.  This class is conducted entirely in Spanish.  The course grade is determined by homework effort, quiz and test grades, conversation grades and class participation/decorum.
 

516 SPANISH  V

Oral communication will be the main focus of this course.  The class is conducted entirely in Spanish.  Students will strengthen their previously learned skills in speaking, reading, and writing.  Grammar will be studied in context to reinforce what students have learned in their previous courses.  Oral presentations, discussions, and compositions are required on a regular basis.  The course content includes excerpts from a variety of authentic literature by Latin American, Chicano and Spanish authors.  The class will also read authentic magazine and newspaper articles and view films and television shows from Spanish-speaking countries.  Written assignments are collected, corrected, and returned to students.  Compositions are graded.  The course grade is determined by homework effort, quiz and test grades, conversation grades and class participation/decorum.
